Aloha Cecilia! I keep hearing the Simon & Garfunkel song "Cecilia, you're breaking my heart." Your research question is very interesting. Are skills the same as developmental milestones? Wonder if they need to be able to READ first before write? Your responsibility is huge -- we middle school teachers depend on you K-teachers to set the foundation for all of their learning. Happy researching, I look forward to seeing what you find out.
Aloha, Cecelia! Your question is well-asked ... I'm sure that many Kindergarten (and other primary) teachers have asked this, or a very similar, question. I believe you will find some good research to help point you along the way toward a better understanding of the processes in place which may keep some children from moving into/through this phase as easily (readily?) as their peers.
Aloha Cecilia!
